வடக்கில் ஊடக சுதந்திரத்தை வலியுறுத்தியும் உதயன் செய்தியாசிரியர் குகநாதன் மீதான தாக்குதலை கண்டித்தும் கண்டன ஆர்ப்பாட்டமொன்று யாழ்ப்பாணத்தில் இன்று இடம்பெற்றுள்ளது.சுதந்திர ஊடக இயக்கம் உள்ளிட்ட ஜந்து ஊடக கூட்டமைப்புடன் இணைந்து வடக்கு ஊடகவியலாளர்கள் இவ்வார்ப்பாட்டத்தினில் பங்கெடுத்திருந்தனர்.

 

Attack on media: The United States condemn

The United States strongly condemns violence against members of the press and is deeply concerned about the recent assault on Gnanasunduram Kuganathan, news editor of Uthayan Tamil daily in Jaffna.  Violence against journalists silences voices, threatens freedom of expression, impairs reconciliation, and undermines democracy.

Stop the War on Journalists in Sri Lanka: Journalists protest in Colombo

Protest against the attack on Uthayan News Editor Gnanasundaram Kuhanathan is held today at Lipton Circus in Colombo at mid day. The proyest is organized by the five media organizations namely ~ Free Media Movement, Sri Lanka Tamil Media Alliance, Sri Lanka Muslim Media Forum, Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association and Federation of Media Employees Trade Union. Nearly 100 journalist, activists, Catholic priests and opposition politicians participated.

 

IFJ Outraged by Brutal Attack on Senior Journalist in Jaffna

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) joins its Sri Lankan affiliates in expressing outrage at a brutal attack on Gnanasundaram Kuhanathan, news editor of the Tamil daily Uthayan, in the northern city of Jaffna on July 29.

The freedom of expression and of the media received another brutal blow with the murderous assault on senior journalist and news editor of the Uthayan newspaper, Gnanasundaram Kuganathan, in Jaffna on Friday. He is now in a critical condition in the intensive care unit of Jaffna Hospital with head injuries due to blows from iron bars.

The latest attack on the news editor of the Jaffna-based Uthayan newspaper, Gnanasundaram Kuhanathan should not be understood merely as an isolated attack on media freedom and freedom of speech in Sri Lanka. It undoubtedly bears far reaching implications and reveals the vicious nature of the renewed and accelerated violent attacks on democratic rights of Sri Lanka’s Tamil people.

 

FMM condemns journalist assault

The Free Media Movement has vehemently condemned the assault on ‘Udayan’ news editor Gnanasundaram Kuhanathan. A statement on behalf of the FMM, signed by Udaya Kalupathirana, says the assault amounts to a breach of ethical and democratic rights to engage in the media profession.
